Are Jayco Trailers Good in Cold Weather?

For those who revel in the beauty of winter, there’s no better way to enjoy the season than to set off on a journey amidst snowy landscapes.

But not all travel trailers and RVs offer a comfortable and cozy environment when the temperature drops.

Are Jayco trailers good in cold weather?

It depends on the model. Jayco’s Eagle, North Point, Pinnacle and Jay Feather lines list the Climate Shield package, which Jayco describes as tested at zero and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The entry-level Jay Flight does not list Climate Shield, and its enclosed underbelly is part of an optional package. Dual-pane windows are an option, not standard equipment.

This article will explore which Jayco trailers are built for cold weather and where the limits are.

6 Cold-Weather Features on Jayco Trailers (and Their Limits)

These six features matter most in the cold. Not every Jayco line has all of them.

1) Climate Shield Insulation

Let’s start with one of the most critical factors – insulation.

Jayco’s cold-weather package is called Climate Shield. On the 2027 Eagle, North Point and Pinnacle pages, Jayco lists it as zero-degree tested and says it protects in temperatures as high as 100 degrees or as low as zero degrees Fahrenheit. It is not on every Jayco. The 2027 Jay Flight page does not mention it.

On the Eagle, the package lists double layer fiberglass batt insulation in the ceiling and floor and double sided radiant barrier insulation in the roof, floor and behind the front cap. The North Point and Pinnacle list double-layer fiberglass batt insulation in the roof and floor plus 2 in. block foam insulation with a reflective foil barrier. Jayco does not give R-values on these pages.

2) Heated Underbelly

Climate Shield models also list a fully enclosed and heated underbelly.

The underbelly of a travel trailer often houses critical components like the water tanks, pipes, and wiring.

In colder climates, these components risk freezing, leading to significant damage and costly repairs.

On the Eagle, North Point and Pinnacle, Jayco lists a fully enclosed and heated underbelly with ducted heat. On the Jay Feather, Jayco says forced heat ducts run into the underbelly area where the holding tanks are located. The Pinnacle also lists 120V heat blankets on all holding tanks and 12V heat tape on the fresh water line as standard. On the North Point, tank heat pads and a heated water line wrap are part of the optional Extreme Weather Package.

A heated underbelly lowers the risk of frozen plumbing. It does not remove it. The heat is ducted, so it only works while the furnace is running, and Jayco’s owner’s manual still tells owners to take precautions against freeze-ups.

3) Windows: Dual-Pane Is an Option

Windows and doors play a significant role in maintaining the temperature within the trailer.

Dual-pane windows are not standard on Jayco towables. On the 2027 Eagle fifth wheel, North Point and Pinnacle, dual-pane tinted safety glass windows are listed under Options. The North Point and Pinnacle list frameless dark-tinted safety glass windows as standard. The Jay Flight and Jay Feather pages list dark-tinted windows only. Winter campers should confirm the window option on the unit’s build sheet before buying.

4) Furnace and Heating Systems

Furnace size depends on the line. Jayco lists a 35,000 BTU furnace on the 2027 Eagle travel trailers and fifth wheels and a 40,000 BTU furnace on the North Point and Pinnacle. The Jay Flight page lists a 19,000 BTU furnace in its Sport Edition package.

A heat pump is not included on every model. The Pinnacle lists a 15,000 BTU main A/C with heat pump in a mandatory package. On the North Point the heat pump is optional, and the 2027 Eagle pages do not list one.

Expect to use more propane and battery power in the cold. Jayco’s owner’s manual notes that increased furnace operation raises battery draw and propane consumption.

Heating safety comes first. Jayco towables are equipped with a combination carbon monoxide and propane alarm. Test it before each trip and at least once a week during use, and never disconnect it. If it sounds, get out of the trailer and get help. The CPSC warns never to use fuel-burning portable heaters or lanterns while sleeping in a camper. Never heat with a gas oven or camp stove. Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from an electric space heater and turn it off before leaving or going to bed, as the U.S. Fire Administration advises.

5) Roof Construction

Jayco builds these trailers with its Magnum Truss roof system. Jayco says that in its own testing the roof withstood 4,500 pounds, which it puts at 50 percent more than competitors’ roofs. That is a manufacturer claim. The model pages do not give a snow load rating.

6) Electric Fireplace on Some Models

The North Point and Pinnacle include an LED fireplace with an electric space heater in the Luxury Package. Select Eagle models offer an LED fireplace with a 5,000 BTU electric space heater in an optional package. Floors are vinyl, not carpet. The 2027 Eagle pages list residential vinyl flooring throughout.

Are Jayco Trailers Good in Extremely Cold Weather?

Jayco’s published test point for Climate Shield is zero degrees Fahrenheit. The model pages make no claim for colder temperatures.

Jayco says the Jay Feather is tested to hold adequate ambient temperatures at 0 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. That describes holding interior temperature in a test. It is not a promise that tanks and water lines will not freeze.

Jayco’s towable owner’s manual also says that, unless labeled for full-time use, the RV is not designed for continuous living or permanent residence. Anyone planning to live in one through a northern winter should check with Jayco or a dealer first.

Of course, it’s always good to adequately prepare any RV or trailer for very cold weather.

Are Jayco Trailers Good in Cold & Wet Weather?

A blend of cold and wet weather presents a unique challenge.

Jayco lists an Alpha Ply TPO roof membrane with a limited lifetime warranty on the Eagle, an Alpha Systems roof membrane on the North Point and Pinnacle, and a PVC roofing membrane with a limited lifetime warranty on the Jay Flight.

In cold, wet weather the bigger moisture problem is often condensation inside the trailer. Jayco’s manual advises cracking windows and roof vents, running the range hood fan while cooking, and not drying wet towels or clothes inside.

How Many Winters Will Jayco Trailers Last?

The lifespan of a Jayco trailer depends heavily on how well it is maintained. Jayco does not publish an expected lifespan.

With proper care and maintenance, a trailer can serve through many winter seasons.

Regular servicing, proper winterizing and de-winterizing, and routine checks for wear and tear, especially after a harsh winter, help keep a trailer ready for many winters.

Freeze damage is the owner’s cost. Jayco’s winterizing guide says repairs due to freezing are not covered under its Towable Limited Warranty.

How to Compare Jayco With Other Brands

Jayco lists Climate Shield as standard on the 2027 Eagle travel trailers and fifth wheels, Eagle SLE, North Point and Pinnacle, and in a mandatory package on the Jay Feather. It is not listed on the Jay Flight.

This article does not rank Jayco against other brands. To compare, check each maker’s spec sheet for the tested temperature, furnace size, underbelly heat, tank heaters and window type, and note which items are standard and which are options.

Prepping Your Jayco Trailer for Cold Weather

Even on a Climate Shield model, owners should prepare the trailer before winter.

First, make sure to inspect the entire trailer before the winter season begins. Check the seals around windows, doors, and the roof to ensure they’re tight and not letting cold air in or warm air out.

Next, consider adding skirting around the base of your trailer. This helps to keep the underbelly warm, which can lower the risk of frozen plumbing.

Check your furnace to ensure it’s working properly and efficiently. Have a qualified technician service the furnace and other gas appliances every year, as the CDC advises, and test the smoke alarm and the CO and propane alarm before each trip.

Lastly, consider investing in a dehumidifier. Cold weather can often bring about condensation inside the trailer, and a dehumidifier can help keep the air dry and prevent potential mold and mildew growth.

Before storage or any night without heat, winterize the plumbing. Drain the system, bypass the water heater and use non-toxic RV antifreeze, following the owner’s manual. Never put automotive antifreeze or windshield washer fluid in the fresh water system. Jayco warns that both are poisonous.

Towing on snow and ice needs extra care. Slow down, leave more following distance and check tire pressure as temperatures drop, as NHTSA advises. Do not use cruise control on icy or wet roads. The National Park Service says to shut off the propane at the tank while driving.

The Best Jayco Models for Winter Travel

Not every Jayco is built for winter. These three lines list Climate Shield as standard equipment:

• Jayco Eagle Series
• Jayco North Point
• Jayco Pinnacle

The 2027 Eagle travel trailers and fifth wheels list Climate Shield as standard, with a fully enclosed and heated underbelly and a 35,000 BTU furnace.

On the Eagle fifth wheel, dual-pane windows and an Extreme Weather Package are listed as options.

The North Point is a fifth wheel with a 40,000 BTU furnace in its standard Climate Shield package.

Its Luxury Package includes an LED fireplace with an electric space heater. Tank heat pads and a heated water line wrap come in the optional Extreme Weather Package.

Of the three, the Pinnacle fifth wheel lists the most cold-weather equipment as standard.

It lists a 40,000 BTU furnace, a fully enclosed and heated underbelly, 120V heat blankets on all holding tanks, 12V heat tape on the fresh water line and a heat pump on the main A/C. Its insulation list matches the North Point’s.

Features and packages change by model year. Confirm them on Jayco’s current spec page or the unit’s build sheet before buying.

Final Thoughts: Are Jayco Trailers Good in Cold Weather?

Jayco’s Climate Shield models are equipped for cold-weather camping down to the maker’s zero-degree test point, provided the furnace is running and the owner prepares for freezing weather. The Jay Flight does not list that package.
