What Is an Outdoor Drum Fan?

Most drum fans are for indoor use only, so an outdoor drum fan has to be specifically rated for it. Look for a stated water-resistance rating.

Do not use an indoor-only drum fan outside or let it get wet.

What Is a Hazardous Location Drum Fan?

A hazardous location fan, sometimes called an explosion-proof fan, is built and certified for places where flammable gases, vapors or dust may be present. A standard drum fan is not, and its motor and switch can ignite fumes. OSHA rules require equipment in these locations to be approved for the class of location and for the specific gas, vapor, dust or fiber present. What Is a Filtered Drum Fan?

What Is a Fixed Speed Drum Fan?

What Is a Multi-Speed Drum Fan?

How Do Drum Fans Work?

Most plug-in drum fans use an AC motor that runs from a standard 120-volt outlet. A few, such as the Big Ass Fans Sidekick, use a brushless DC motor. The blades on a drum fan are designed to move a lot of air quickly.

This airflow cools people by moving air across the skin. It does not lower the temperature of the room.

The drum fan’s barrel shape allows for large blades to propel a wide column of air.

This is also why you will find that most drum fans are very powerful and can move a large quantity of air.

Are Drum Fans Loud?

Drum fans are loud compared with household fans.

This is because they are designed for power, not quietness. If you are using a belt-driven drum fan, the noise level will depend on which motor is used and the size of the fan.

Belt drive models are usually the quieter type. Makers do not always publish noise figures. As one reference point, Big Ass Fans lists its large Black Jack portable fan at 78.2 dBA at maximum speed.

Drum fans work best as workhorses in extreme conditions.

How Big Are Drum Fans?

What Else Should I Consider When Buying a Drum Fan?

When you are buying a drum fan, there are a few other things you need to consider besides price.

You might want to consider:

• Your needs: what type of work do you plan on using the fan for?
• The environment: is it indoors and dry? Outdoor, wet, or flammable areas need a fan rated for them.
• The noise level: how loud is too loud for you?
• The size of the fan: how big an area do you need to move air through?
• The type of fan: do you need a belt-drive or direct-drive drum fan?
• The features: do you want multiple speeds, wheels, and a tilting frame?

Drum Fan Safety

Always follow the manual for the fan in front of you. These points come from maker manuals and OSHA rules:

• Plug the fan straight into a grounded outlet. Maxx Air’s manual says not to use its barrel fans with an extension cord.
• Keep the guards on. DEWALT’s manual says not to operate the fan with blade guards or any safety device removed.
• Unplug the fan before moving, cleaning or storing it. Maxx Air notes that its fan motors have an automatic reset overload device, so the fan may start unexpectedly.
• Keep indoor-only fans dry, and keep standard fans away from flammable vapors.
• In U.S. workplaces, OSHA requires fan blades less than 7 feet above the floor or working level to be guarded, with guard openings no larger than half an inch.

If you work in a factory, construction site, garage, or gym, then drum fans can prove highly necessary to your safety and comfort.
